Job Description

About the Role

Herd testing is a vital part of CRV’s data capture services, helping farmers manage herd performance, genetics, and overall profitability.

We are seeking a Herd Testing Technician for a seasonal, casual position starting asap through to June 2026, covering the Southland region.

This role is casual and paid per job completed, meaning:

  • Work depends on the herd testing schedule and farmer demand
  • Hours vary around milking times,
  • You’ll need to be comfortable with short-notice or variable work
  • Technician equipment and vehicle provided for herd testing

This is a hands-on, physical role based in milking sheds and includes:

  • Setting up herd testing equipment
  • Recording accurate data on a handheld device
  • Taking milk samples
  • Working closely with farmers during their milking times

The role involves early starts, travel throughout the region, and occasional overnight stays. No two days are the same—every day brings new farms, new people, and new challenges.

Desired Skills and Experience

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • High attention to detail and confidence with technology
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build good farmer relationships
  • Excellent time management and comfort with flexible, variable work hours
  • A natural early riser, milking shed hours
  • Comfortable working around cows and doing physical work
  • Some dairy farming knowledge would be preferable 
  • Ability to work safely around livestock in the milking shed
  • Willingness to travel and stay overnight when needed
  • A seasonal working mindset and comfort with casual, on-demand hours
  • Full, clean driver’s licence 
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand
